Effective Guidelines for Disinfecting & Cleaning Two-Way Radio (2020)

In response to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, 2Way Radio Shop is offering some guidelines on effectively cleaning and disinfecting your two-way radios and accessories.
Two-way radio cleaning and disinfecting is a good regular maintenance practice.
First, you should check to see if the manufacturer provided two-way radio cleaning guidelines with the radio.
Before you clean the radio, make sure it is turned off and the battery has been removed. Find a well-ventilated area to conduct the cleaning in.
When cleaning your two-way radio it is important to know the basic dos and don’ts to prevent damage
Don’t
- Do not immerse the radio in water.
- Do not clean the radio while it is turned on or charging.
- Do not pour or spray any cleaning solution or liquid directly onto the surface of the radio.
Do
- Be sure the radio is turned off.
- Remove the batteries or battery pack before cleaning.
- Clean a battery pack housing separately, and only the outer facing plastic shell or housing.
- Remove the belt clip if possible and clean it separately.
- Remove any externally connected accessories such as earpieces, headsets or hand microphones before cleaning.
Clean your radios in a well-ventilated area and away from heat sources.
Avoid breathing vapours or fumes from approved cleaning solutions
Effective Cleaning:
- Apply a 0.5% detergent-based water solution with a clean cloth to your device.
- Get a short-bristled, stiff brush (a new toothbrush would work just fine) and gently scrub.
- Grab a tissue to dry off your device.
- Ensure that no solution remains in or around any connectors, cracks or crevices.
Disinfecting:
- The easiest and most effective way to disinfect your device is with over-the-counter isopropyl alcohol.
- Never apply the alcohol directly to the device.
- Apply the isopropyl to a clean cloth, then use it to wipe down the device.
- Certain chemicals and the vapours they emit can have a detrimental effect on plastic and metal plating’s.
