Hytera PNC560 XSecure PoC Product Review (2024)

By Niamh McManus

The Hytera PNC560 5G XSecure Rugged device is the latest  Push-to-talk over Cellular (PoC) smart device released from Hytera. Hytera claims this device offers ‘Mission-critical push-to-talk over 5G/LTE networks with super fast speeds and low latency’. In this article, we will explore the main features and applications of the PNC560 and review the device.

A little bit about PoC devices

Before we jump into the review of the Hytera PNC560, let us discuss what a PoC device is. PoC stands for push-to-talk over cellular. PoC is a technology that allows for instant communication between devices nationwide. Unlike traditional two-way radios with a limited range, PoC relies on cellular data networks (4G, 4G, LTE) for communication, providing nationwide coverage.

The main benefits of PoC are:

  • Instant communications. No wasted time dialling numbers, just simple push-to-talk for immediate connection.
  • Group communication. Multiple users can communicate and collaborate at once. This increases workflow efficiency and coordination.
  • Wider coverage. Extends beyond the limitations of traditional radios without the need for expensive infrastructure. This makes it cost-effective for long-distance comms.
  • Application-rich devices. Most PoC devices offer GPS tracking, text messaging, emergency features and more!
  • PoC is popular in industries requiring constant communication and coordination, like construction, security, logistics, hospitality, and even gaming.

Features

Design and Build

Dedicated Large PTT Button

Some Smart devices use an on-screen push-to-talk style app without the actual button, These can fail in scenarios where users who wear gloves or work in environments where touchscreens might be less responsive. The Hytera PNC560 smart device has a dedicated large push-to-talk button on the left side, similar to that of a traditional two-way radio.

6.3-inch touchscreen

The Hytera PNC560 smart device has a 6.3-inch touchscreen ( about as big as an iPhone 14 / 15 screen) that can be used with gloves on. With a glove-friendly touchscreen, users can maintain functionality without compromising safety or removing gloves.

A larger screen allows you to view information more easily, such as maps, real-time updates, or images. This can be crucial for tasks like coordinating deliveries, monitoring security footage, or referencing diagrams during maintenance work.

5040 mAh high-capacity detachable battery

A high-capacity battery like 5040 mAh ensures that the device can last a full shift or longer on a single charge. This is beneficial for workers who depend on constant push-to-talk (PTT) communication,  like security guards, delivery drivers, or construction coordinators.  A dead battery in these situations can disrupt workflows and potentially compromise safety.

With a longer battery life, users don’t have to worry about their device running out of power in the middle of a critical task. They can focus on their jobs without interrupting their workflow with frequent charging breaks. The fact that the PNC560 device has a detachable battery makes it easy to have charged spare ones on hand to swap out.

Camera Capabilities

The Hytera PNC560 has three cameras. The device has an 8MP wide-angle back  camera which provides enhanced situational awareness:  A wide-angle rear camera can capture a wider field of view, which could be beneficial for tasks like:

  • Sharing real-time visuals of a scene during emergency response situations.
  • Documenting repairs or maintenance work by capturing the entire area of concern in a single image.
  • Inspecting hard-to-reach areas or equipment by taking wide-angle photos.
  • Potential for future applications: The presence of multiple cameras opens up the possibility for future development of features that utilise camera capabilities.

On the other hand, the primary function of a PoC device is Push-to-talk voice communication.  Extensive camera functionalities may not be the top priority for all users and increases the cost and complexity of the device

Dual SIM 5G/LTE

The PNC560 comes with dual-SIM 5G/LTE, providing greater flexibility for smooth voice calls, ultra-clear video streaming, and fast transfer of large files, anytime and anywhere.

Dedicated panic alarm

The device has a large orange dedicated emergency button located on the top of the device. The dedicated button can help to reduce stress and confusion for workers under pressure in emergencies. A dedicated emergency button offers a clear and familiar action, even for users who are not tech-savvy. They don’t have to worry about remembering complex procedures or app functionalities in a critical moment. It is also conveniently placed to make accessing it quick and easy.

AI-based noise cancellation technology

This enhanced noise cancellation technology actively filters out background noise, like traffic, machinery, or even conversations in crowded workplaces. This ensures your voice is transmitted clearly, minimising misunderstandings and ensuring important information is delivered accurately.

Ruggedness and Durability

IP68 and 1.5m drop resistant

The PNC560 has an IP68 dust and waterproof rating. This signifies that the device is resistant to dust ingress and can withstand submersion in water for extended periods. This ensures the device can perform successfully in dusty environments like construction sites or flour mills, and can survive unexpected splashes, spills, or even being dropped in puddles.

The PNC560 has also been drop-tested up to 1.5m. This type of rugged smart device is less likely to be damaged by everyday wear and tear or accidental exposure to the elements. This can potentially lead to cost savings on repairs or replacements in the long run.

An IP68 rating does not guarantee the device is shatterproof.  Using a protective case  is still recommended to  avoid damage from drops or impacts -luckily this device comes with a tempered glass screen protector

Features and Applications

Android 12 operating system.

Android 12 OS, Google ecosystem is widely regarded as the best operating system for businesses. It enables you to use Google apps thanks to its GMS certification, as well as third-party apps for a truly effective and productive smart device experience.

Bluetooth 5.0

Bluetooth allows for connecting wireless headsets or earphones to the PoC device. This enables hands-free PTT communication, improving user safety and convenience. Users can remain focused on their tasks while communicating,  especially important for professions that require multitasking or using both hands for work.

Near Field Communication (NFC)

NFC can streamline workflows by enabling quick data exchange between the PoC device and other NFC-enabled tools or equipment. Here are some potential applications:

  • Scanning NFC tags on equipment to access maintenance manuals or safety instructions.
  • Tapping NFC tags on inventory items to automatically update stock levels or retrieve product details.
  • NFC-enabled badges for secure building access or logging work hours on specific projects.

Biometric data ID

Users can unlock the PNC560 using biometric security data (fingerprint ID and facial recognition). This is an enhanced security feature. Having both options is ideal when users are wearing gloves and cannot use fingerprint ID they can use facial recognition.

Things to consider

This device requires a SIM to operate on 4G/5G networks, which is not included with the device.

The device also requires a mobile application/software to enable the push-to-talk functionality,

The verdict

The Hytera PNC560 emerges as a feature-rich PoC device designed for mission-critical communication.  It boasts a user-friendly design with a large touchscreen, a long-lasting battery, and a dedicated PTT button for seamless communication.  The combination of 5G connectivity, AI noise cancellation, and a rugged build ensures clear and reliable communication even in challenging environments. The Hytera  PNC560 offers a compelling option for users who prioritize advanced functionalities, durability, and crystal-clear communication in demanding work scenarios.

We are a big fan of these devices and our field engineers have been equipped with them for working on sites. These devices require a mobile application to enable Push-to-Talk-Over-Cellular, we used them with our integrated modular platform called TRBOcall software

Just one issue we have experienced to make note of, the emergency button on top of the device can be sensitive and has set off a few false alarms for our field engineers. This has been a learning curve and something that can be ironed out with more user experience with the device.

These devices are available for purchase on our e-commerce website for £506.25 ex VAT (price correct at time of writing) HERE
