Lake District: Top 3 family friendly activities for February half-term (2023)

By Niamh McManus

It can seem impossible to find ways to keep the kids entertained during the February half-term. Why not plan a fun for all the family adventure to the Lake District? From jaw-dropping scenery to fascinating wildlife – the Lake District is the perfect backdrop to create memories which will last forever.

To help take the stress away from planning, we have made a list of the top 3 family-friendly activities to do in the Lake District this February half-term!

Lake District in February Half term: What to expect

This Year The February half term falls between Monday the 20th of February and Monday the 27th of February.

Undoubtedly, the best things about the Lake District in February half-term are the still waters and the surreal mountain views. Although it can get a bit chilly during the winter season, there are far fewer people around. You will feel like you have the whole place to yourself!

Top 3 family-friendly activities:

Explore lake Windermere by electric motorboat

Stretching 10.5 miles long and 1 mile wide, Lake Windermere is the largest natural lake in England. Discover the beauty of Windermere at your own pace by hiring an electric motorboat. The trip takes between 1 and 2 hours, with no previous boating experience necessary.

These sturdy boats have comfy padded seating and a roll-back roof for use in rain or shine! The kids will love being allowed a go at steering the boat (with adult supervision of course) and exploring from one side of the lake to the other.

To add even more excitement to the day, why not give the kids a walkie-talkie each to communicate over the water? Let the kids’ imagination run wild pretending to be pirates contacting passing ships or a cruise captain communicating with their trusty crew.

We would recommend bringing a couple of ICOM IC-F29SR2 walkie-talkies on your boat trip. They’re licence free meaning the kids can simply plug and play – no setup needed! Additionally, this model is IP67 making it dustproof and water-resistant. Perfect for your little one’s trip on the water.

Child and pushchair-friendly walks

Hiking is one of the most popular reasons people plan a trip to the Lake District.
Insane views, Fresh air and a chance to tire the kids out. What’s not to love?

Although full to the brim with energy I doubt your kid’s little legs will survive a hike up the likes of Helvellyn. Instead, we would suggest some shorter more scenic routes suitable for kids and pushchairs.

The Lake District’s website outlines some great hikes, however, we think that the Elterwater to Skelwith Bridge walk would be ideal for the whole family.

This stunning route is approx 4 km long from start to finish (2 km each way) and consists of main cobblestones suitable for kids and pushchairs.

On this route, you will journey through yellow meadows before arriving lakeside at the iconic new bridge where you can stop and picnic at Skelwith Force, a roaring waterfall.

Give the kids some extra freedom by providing them with a walkie-talkie for instant communication on the trail. Don’t panic when they have run a little too fast out of sight, ask them to come back and stop running so far over. The novelty of the walkie-talkie for the kids will make it feel more like a fun game than a way to keep them safe.

We would recommend the Motorola T62 twin pack as a great licence-free option for the kids! With a simple single-button push-to-talk feature and lightweight design, this pair of walkie-talkies are perfect for keeping your kids safe.

Try your hand at Mountain Biking in the Grizedale Forest

Grizedale Forest is located perfectly between Coniston Water and Lake Windermere. The forest has 7 mountain biking trails which are free to use. Don’t have a bike with you? No worries, you can easily hire one from the visitor centre located at the front of the forest.

Not only will a day of mountain biking allow the family to see some wicked views, but it also provides a full body workout and ensures the little one will pass out near bedtime. That’s a win-win situation in our books.

We would recommend getting your helmets on and heading out on the green trail along Hawkshead moor. This ride is 10.5 miles long and will take you approx 2.5hrs.

Mountain Biking

To stay connected whilst cycling away why not invest in some Motorola T82 extreme Walkie talkies accompanied by the bike mounting kit for a fuss-free ride? Again, these are licence-free radios meaning you can use them straight out of the box – ideal for outdoor adventures and they will add an extra layer of safety to your ride.
