Licence-free radios typically arrive ready to use with no programming required. Licence-free radios work well in smaller areas. These devices are ideal for recreational use such as camping or hiking. The main disadvantage of licence-free is that all licence-free radios transmit and receive on the same frequencies. This means that you may receive unwanted traffic and other people operating on the same frequency may hear your conversations.
Due to this, we do not recommend Licence-free devices for schools or in situations where sensitive information may be shared.
Licenced radios are devices that require pre-programming before use. They are typically programmed to set frequencies provided to you by OFCOM in the form of a licence. These devices operate on their own given frequencies as they are much safer to use in situations where sensitive data may be shared via the two-way radio. These radios are 8 x more powerful than licence-free radios which makes them ideal for communication over larger areas. Licenced radios tend to be slightly more expensive to buy but come with a wider selection of safety and user features. Please note that operating a licenced radio in the UK without a valid licence is illegal.

Yes, we can! To do this all we require is a copy of your OFCOM licence. We can program/reprogram all radios even if they were not purchased through us.*
*Please note, that if you didn’t purchase your devices through us then your devices may be password-protected.
As long as you have bought new devices on the same frequency as your current radios, there should be no issue programming them to communicate with each other. To programme them to work together, we require a copy of your OFCOM licence and one of your current radios to clone.

The average lifespan of a two-way radio battery is around 18-24 months. This depends on how well-maintained the battery has been and the usage of the battery.

device’s Ingress protection rating or IP rating for short is the sealing level of electrical enclosures against intrusions from foreign bodies.
This means the device’s protection level against solids and liquids. An IP rating is made up of two numbers. The first number relates to the level of protection against solids (EG dust) and the second number relates to the level of protection against liquids.
For more information on this check out the IP rating section on this blog post.
ATEX two-way radios are radios that have been designed and tested to work in explosive atmospheres, such as mines and chemical plants Any device or action that emits a spark or heat could cause a dangerous chemical reaction in the atmosphere. ATEX radios tend to be blue to differentiate them from other two-way devices.
Analog is the traditional type of radio and Digital is the newest radio technology. Analog transfers data via frequency modulation (FM) and digital transfers data in a binary format made up of 0s and 1s.
Digital radios offer better audio quality however many two-way radio users think digital makes human voices sound more robotic.
If you want to grow your system in the future we would recommend going with digital as they offer the most growth as a futureproofing measure for your system.
Two-way radios can operate in two frequencies, UHF and VHF.
VHF (Very High Frequency) two-way radios are normally most recommended for use in outdoor settings with little obstacles between the communication points. VHF radios communicate over larger distances when they are not disrupted by obstacles such as buildings. These are ideal for use on open roads, large outdoor sites with little buildings or even an open lake.
UHF (Ultra High Frequency) radio waves are better at penetrating through obstacles such as buildings or dense forests of trees. UHF often has a better all-around signal.
The main benefit you will gain from using a two-way radio over a smartphone is improved safety. Two-way radios contain an abundance of safety features such as lone worker and man down. The features can send alarms out across the whole radio system when activated to alert people of a problem quickly and efficiently. It’s also difficult to unlock and type on a smartphone with gloves on. Two-way radios are operated by a large easy-to-use Push-To-Talk (PTT) button which can be used easily in gloves.
Another key difference is that Two-way radios do not rely on cellular data to communicate. This is especially important if you are in a remote area such as camping or hiking where cellular data may not be available.

Walkie-talkie’ is a slang term referring to handheld portable two-way radios. All Walkie-talkies are a form of two-way radio, however, not all two-way radios are walkie-talkies. This is because some forms of two-way radios are not portable, some are wall-mounted or fixed in vehicles.
